Selayang (or KL North) is located in the Gombak district of Selangor. The town has experienced rapid development in recent years as a result of Gombak district administration’s relocation from Rawang to Bandar Baru Selayang (BBS) / Selayang New Town in 1997. Selayang New Town is also a major residential area in Selayang with a number of neighbourhoods and apartment complexes.
Accessibility and Transportation
Selayang strategically located at the border of Kuala Lumpur and Selangor, it acts as a main route to Rawang through Jalan Ipoh, and this route is connected to Jalan Kuching as main Rawang-Kuala Lumpur route. Highly accessible via major highways such as MRR2 and DUKE. It is also an optional getaway to Damansara by passing Kepong via Kepong-Selayang Highway, which is a neighbouring town to the southwest. A route connecting Selayang and Gombak in the east is Jalan Batu Caves, which is annually closed during the Thaipusam celebration. Public transportation such as the local bus line, KTM Komuter aligning at Taman Wahyu station, Batu Caves station or Kepong Sentral station and then transfer to a bus or taxi to get to your destination within Selayang.
Most of Selayang is administered by Majlis Perbandaran Selayang (MPS). Part of the town that spills over into the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur is administered by Dewan Bandaraya Kuala Lumpur. The postcode for Selayang is 68100 Batu Caves.
There are 64 primary schools and 28 secondary schools in the area serving the educational needs of the community. Among the secondary schools are SMK Seri Selayang, SMK Hillcrest, SMK Darul Ehsan, SMK St Mary and SK Selayang Utama while some primary schools include Sjkc Selayang Baru, SJK (C) Kheow Bin, SJK (T) Batu Caves , SK (1) Selayang Baru , SK Bandar Baru Selayang, SK Selayang Jaya , SK Selayang Utama and SRA Kg Sungai Tua Baharu. There are more educational options in neighbouring townships. While there are no international schools in Selayang itself, it is surrounded by several reputed international schools a short distance away.
Selayang Hospital is the township’s main hub. There is also the community clinic Klinik Kesihatan Selayang Baru as well as private clinics serving the community’s medical needs.
Shopping & Grocery
Selayang is known for the Pasar Borong Selayang, wholesale market where one can get plenty of fresh vegetables, meats and fruits at wholesale prices. The Pasar Rakyat Selayang is also another popular market frequented by the community. Aside from that, Pasar Malam Bandar Baru Selayang and Pasar Malam Selayang Indah takes place every Thursday and Saturday night respectively. For those for fancy jungle produces, do visit the Pasar Tani Borong Selayang. In addition, there are also supermarkets, mini-markets , frozen food mart and convenience stores within proximity such as Sri Ternak Food Mart, NSK Trade City Selayang , Lotus's Selayang , Pasaraya Okay and Eco-Shop Selayang , Mydin , CB Wholesale Mart HQ Selayang , CB Frozen Food , CYL Food , Seng Huat Food. Of course, there are popular convenience stores available within vicinity like 7-11, 99 Speedmart, KK and MyNews.
There are 2 neighbourhood malls namely Selayang Mall and Selayang Capitol Kompleks. However, there are nothing much in these 2 malls as they are not being taken care off well by its management. Fortunately, though Selayang is surrounded by several other townships that offers better shopping experiences such as AEON Mall Metro Prima, Kepong and Plaza Arcardia Desa Park City. Other shopping malls are also short distances away.
Recreational & Local Attractions
Selayang is surrounded by some nature attractions that serve the recreational needs of its community. Within Selayang itself is the MPS Sri Siantan Sports Centre a community sports centre which houses a public swimming pool and many other sports amenities. There is also the Selayang Stadium for the community’s sports events and tournaments. And also 99 Wonderland Park , a unique Recreational Landmark that adopts an “open” concept, allowing the visitors to interact with the birds and animals. The park includes T-Rex Ring, 12 Zodiac Zone, Golden Waterfall, Sky Fountain - all of which featuring with LED lights in the evening.
FRIM (Forest Research Institute Malaysia), Bukit Lagong Recreational Forest (outdoor recreational spots), Taman Rimba Komanwel (Commonwealth Forest Park and Resort), Selayang Hot Spring or Kolam Air Panas Selayang, The Taman Rekreasi Bandar Baru Selayang , Batu Caves, Muzium Orang Asli, and Templer’s Park further away nearer to Rawang.

Since Selayang area has a diverse population, it is also surrounded by many places of worship serving the community’s religious obligations such as Masjid Al-Firdaus, Xian Fa Shi Gong Temple, Selayang Chinese Methodist Church, Sri Maha Mariamman Temple and St Matthew’s Church.
Selayang has a active business community and is surrounded by several industrial estates such as Prima Selayang Industrial Park and Taman Selayang Utama Industrial Park which houses mainly light and medium industries such as food manufacturing and more.
